An Obadiah Sherratt table base figure of a putto and cornucopia C1820. The figure is 10" and in Staffordshire Figures 1740-1900 the Moriartys quote the value at $500-$1000. These table base figures are typically Sheratt, this one has a footed paw which he uses in other figures, Neptune is one. The colors are vibrant, the bases molded and the figures detailed and hand painted. Staffordshire is really folk art and here it is at its earliest and I think best. Not the refinment of Wood's or Walton's figures but all out color and robustness. Sherratt's personality must have been broad, only an extrovert could have made this, and also maybe a little bawdy. It is rumored that he owned an alehouse. The figure is perfect, and the figure is gesturing and I have shown it from all angles. This is Staffordshire at its best. |
