A beautiful early 19th century polychrome creamware teapot, probably Leeds 1800 or earlier. Globular form with a flowered terminal at the top the teapot stands 5". The handle is the highly desirable double twist so popularized by Towner in his book Creamware. Decorated in polychrome in the Kings Rose and with columbine and larkspur on deep cream ground. The finial at the top is not painted but remains in the cream ground. the condition is excellent. Creamware is the direct descendent of the lead glazed wares of the Middle Ages and was the main product in England between 1760 and 1820 and was exported to every country on the continent. I love the warmth of it and the feel is like nothing else. |
