A wonderful Bloor Derby vase in cobalt blue with a lovely hand painted floral bouquet and gilt decoration. Bloor Derby is the epitome of English Ceramics, their pieces are highly collectable today for the quality of the work and decoration. robert Bloor took over the Derby factiory in 1811, and made several changes tothe work. the shapes were larger, the decoration more flamboyand and gilded. rich colors were used and lavish use of gold typified the period. There is some loss of the gilt to the handles, an unusual spot for this, but the colors and glaze is excellent and the piece is vibrant.

Sold

A beautiful early 19th century polychrome creamware teapot, probably Leeds 1800 or earlier. Globular form with a flowered terminal at the top the teapot stands 5". The handle is the highly desirable double twist so popularized by Towner in his book Creamware. Decorated in polychrome in the Kings Rose and with columbine and larkspur on deep cream ground. The finial at the top is not painted but remains in the cream ground. the condition is excellent.

Creamware is the direct descendent of the lead glazed wares of the Middle Ages and was the main product in England between 1760 and 1820 and was exported to every country on the continent. I love the warmth of it and the feel is like nothing else.

This is a large toby sometimes called The Gin Lady, or Martha Gunn. 19th century and standing 10" it is about 7" wide. Done in shades of green and yellow she is holding a bottle in one hand and a glass in the other. Her dress is beautifully patterned, the top in a geometric decoration and the skirt done in floral panels. There is a nice yellow ruffle at the bottom. She is standing on what is meant to be grass and flowers, the handle is green. there are some losses to the paint due to age, but no real collector will mind that.

Martha Gunn was a historical figure and is famous for bathing royal personages in the sea at Brighton. There is an English rhyme that goes

To Brighton came he, Came George III's son

To be bathed in the sea By famed Martha Gunn.

Many members of the nobility and other well known personages of that period were bathed in the sea by this esteemed character. Martha Gunn died on the 2nd of May 1815, at the age of 88, and her grave can be visited today at St. Nicholas Churchyard. Her appearance has been permanently captured by the potters of the day and is a treat for toby jug collectors.

Just for fun I included a picture of an old ad i ran in The Magazine Antiques.
