This is a 19th century Staffordshire childs mug with religious maxims popular in the 19th century. Used as teaching aids, these values were literally taken in as food and drink. Subjects were varied, and the mugs were purchased at fairs held throughout the country. This one says "That the soul be without knowledge it is not good." And on the reverse the transfer reads "The earth is the Lords." This is a very popular area of collecting. the mug is perfect and dates 1840.

The Bow factory was founded in 1744 and closed in 1765 but before they did in that short period they made some of the most beautiful and desirable porcelain figures England has produced. Here is a wonderful example of the work of that great factory. A Pair of Recumbent Deer with Bocage. Unrestored and in excellent condition. there is a very old repair to the foreleg of one of the deer which does not at all detract from the desirability of these rare figures. In figures of this type and Staffordshire as well damage is usually done to the bocage, the leaves and flowers chip or break away over the years. Not so with this pair of life like creatures. So special and very fine. I would date them to about 1750.
