Exceptional and rare Staffordshire bocage figure "The Return" by John Walton C1820. Depicting the Holy Family's Return From Egypt this is one of the finest expressions of the folk art of England which is Staffordshire, and is expressed by one of its master and most famous and sought after potters, John Walton. While naive in subject the technique is sophisticated, displaying the potters mastery of his medium in manipulating the clay, the modeling and the glazing techniques.
Bocage figures were always given their own setting, usually bucolic with a tree from which leaves and flowers hung. Bocage or tree from the French meaning woodland, and were intended for an upmarket clientele since they were expensive and labor intensive and required great skill. They required many mold parts, glazes, paints and decoration. With their eyes on the upper class market the potters created figures that are bright, porcelain like, reminiscent of classical 18th Century porcelain figures and painted in colors that integrated the manganese glazes of earlier work with the apple greens unique to the 1820 period. Little is known of John Waltons life, but his work has become famous and his name associated with these bocage figures. He was born in 1780 and he is listed in trade directories as early as 1818 and he is responsible for the Staffordshire term "Walton School" used to describe bocage figures without attribution.
This figure is made of pearl glazed earthenware and has overglaze enamel decoration which requires several firings. The base is oval and shows a grained texture, which is produced by using a stiff brush. Remember these figures were hand made and hand decorated. The figure stands 8" and is 6" wide. The condition is mint which is exceptional given the delicacy of the bocage and fact that it is the place where most restorations occur. I have taken a picture of the back to show what a completely unrestored bocage should look like. This figure is charming, note the daisys in the bit of the donkey's mouth on both sides, the detail of Mary's dress and the mantle and shawl of St joseph. This figure is a collectors treasure and is a twin to the Walton figure "The Flight Into Egypt" which shows a similar grouping with an infant. This figure is an outstanding addition to any Staffordshire collection.

A 19th Century creamware childs plate with a beautiful polychrome painted border with a black transfer cartouche to the center titled Love Between Brothers & Sisters. The plate is scalloped and there are swags of flowers painted in shades of blue, pink and green. C 1840 This is one plate I have never seen, and I have had hundreds. The transfer reads: Love Between brothers and Sisters. Birds in their little nests agree. And tis a shameful sight. when children of one family, fall out and clude and fight. The word clude and fight is Old English and this plate is really a childs plate collectors delight. There is a firing crack to the plate at 5 o'clock which in no way detracts from its value. The plate measures 6".

A set of 10 Minton botanical dessert plates, second half of the 19th century. Minton produced the finest quality porcelain in europe during the period from 1830 to 1860 and was known for the quality of their decoration, employing artists from French factories.
The plates are 9", a generous dessert size, and are a white ground with a 2" apple green border. Around the border is a raised decoration surrounding the plate which the artist chose to leave without other decoration. There is a gilt decoration to the inside of the plate, not too ornate. to the center are painted flowers, zinnias, pansies, roses, asters, morning glories, all Spring and Summer blooms. They are colorful and finely detailed. The palatte is one of soft violets, pinks and soft green leaves. There is some paint loss due to age, but nothing to detract from the beauty of this fine set.

This is one of the finest and prettiest dessert services I have had. It is early, first half of the 19th century, and has various botanical scenes painted on each of the plates and service pieces. Consisting of 12 large dessert plates, 2 oval serving plates, one sauce tureen with cover and a fabulous comport on stand. The set is a beautiful shade of pink on a white ground and to the center are hand painted botanical decorations, different for each piece. The handles are classical in design and are gilt decorated as are the edges of the plates and top of the tureen. The comport is on a fluted base, and has a deep well inside where a botanical spray is painted. The comport, plates and serving pieces are gilt decorated and scalloped. the most interesting detail and rarely seen is a raised white acanthas and swag decoration to all of the pieces which is gorgeous.
The comport stands 6 1/2" tall, is 12" X 9". the tureen is 6 1/2" to the top of the cover. The oval sweetmeat plates are 10" x 9". The plates are a generous 9" in keeping with the period. There is some loss of paint to the plates which is consistent with its age, nothing serious, but this set is antique and I mention it for accuracy. Twelve desserts, 2 oval sweatmeats, 1 sauce tureen and 1 fabulous comport.
Altogether an impressive set and a wonderful addition to your other fine pieces.
